Ohio School Report Card and New System

Mar 24, 2013

This update seeks to provide a visual representation of the new grading system created under H.B. 555. The new grading system departs significantly from the previous grading system and will be phased in over several years.  The attached chart provides a general overview of the new grading system. The chart provides the years each part will phased in to the grading system. Parts shaded in blue will be reported as a grade. Parts shaded in light gray will be reported as a statistic.

As the attached chart demonstrates, the Overall Grade will be based on the six Components. The Components are six defined areas and will be graded. Each Component Grade will be based on one or more Measures (found below each Component). For example, the Achievement Component will be based on two graded Measures: Performance Index Score and Performance Indicators Met. The Measures are either graded or reported as a statistic.

At this time, it is unknown how the Overall Grade and Component Grades will be determined exactly (i.e. what it will take to earn an A). H.B. 555 does provide several guideposts for grading different Measures, but as a whole, much of the grading system is yet to be determined. The specific requirements for grades are to be determined by the State Board of Education. The standards for grading the 2012-2013 school year are to be determined by April 30, 2013.
